TV, books, movies: Who's your favorite fictional father?
I have to tell you, I was shocked -- shocked! -- to see that I'm the only one in my 'hood who picked him! When I saw the QotD, he was the first (and practically only) father who sprang to mind.
Atticus Finch, in To Kill a Mockingbird. He's the best father in fiction, period. I loved him in the book, and Gregory Peck was just the perfect embodiment of him in the movie (which remains probably the best book-to-film adaptation ever). Except for the fact that I love my daddy, I would have wanted Atticus to be mine. He may not have been the most affectionate or demonstrative father, but he loved his children deeply, and they knew it. His patience with them was limitless, and he spoke to them like adults.
"Miss Jean Louise, stand up. Your father's passin'." Still makes me cry.

[this is good] Oh, I think he's completely awesome. The best, really. And I saw that others had answered the question this way.
But here's the thing.
I didn't want him to be my dad.
I wanted to marry him.
So...yeah.

Hi, random butter! Glad you approve. ;-)
You know, I knew I would not be alone in my answer, but how could I be dishonest? Better to be a sheep than a liar...

Let's see. I know I read the book in 9th grade, and just fell in love with that character. Scout and Jem thought he was so old, but I always pictured him like, oh, late 40s. I was always in love with men that age.
I am honestly not sure if I saw the movie before that. I think maybe not. But I'd been in love with Gregory Peck for at least 4 or 5 years by that time, because I know I saw Roman Holiday when I was 10, and a couple of other things he was in, so I guess it would have been a natural fit, either way.

I didn't appreciate men that age until I got to be...this age. Or so. But had I seen Gregory Peck in something before I saw TKaM, I probably would have fallen in love with him at an early age, too; since I was love with Humphrey Bogart, it wasn't really about age. But as it was, he was just too fatherly, or at least avuncular, for a crush, for me, in that movie. Now, on the other hand, or even by my late teens, that's another story.
